(2) Elsa Widya Hapsari, S.Pd., M.Ed. Nowadays, English is the most widely studied and used second and foreign language As we know in Indonesia, poople do not use English in daily communication. And the issue of mother tongue is nothing new In some countries also the same as in Indonesia, although English was not the mother tongue of the majority of the population, English can be used as the language of instruction of as a foreign language In fact, so far there has been little research on the influence of mother tongue on learning speaking English, especially in pronunciation Based on the description above, the researcher is interested in conducting research with the title "The Influence of Kutainese Mother Tongue on Students Speaking English Pronunciation at the Fourth Semester Students of the English Department at Kutai Kartanegara University in Academic Year 2022/2023. Seeing this phenomenon, the researchers are interested in formulating the problem How is the influence of Kutainese mother tongue on students speaking English pronunciation at the fourth semester students of English Department of Kutai Kartanegara in academic year 2022/20237 Therefore, the purpose of this study is as follows: To know the influence of Kutainese mother tongue on students' speaking English pronunciation at the fourth semester students of English Department of Kutai Kartanegara University in academic year 2022/2023. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive design. The subject of this research is the fourth semester students of the English Department of Kutai Kartanegara University in the academic year 2022/2023 which consisted of 5 students who used Kutainese as their mother tongue. In this study, the researcher used several techniques, namely reading tests, interview and documentation. The research technique used Miles and Huberman which means using several step analysis could be defined as consisting of five current flows of activity that was data reduction, data display, data classification, data interpretation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results of the study are as follows:(1) In general, the Kutainese students had a negative influence in speaking. The different nature especially in Supra-segmental features. Kutainese and Native speakers have significant differences especially in Supra-segmental future (Stress, Intonation, features of connected speech and voice quality), (2) The students had problems pronouncing English words. Some of the students problems in pronouncing English are has little vocabulary, when the students see new vocabulary that they don't know they will difficult to pronounce the word, also the anxiety they having could make them mispronounce the words, mother tongue or L1 and seldom to practice their and speaking English. (3) One of the ways to solve the students' problems in pronouncing English words is to practice listening to English and open an oxford dictionary. In general all of the subjects showed they solved their problems by practicing their listening and speaking. |
